Hello Foodie Friends,

Boston is truly a gem for those who love to explore cities by foot, and I’ve had the pleasure of visiting several times over the past nine years since we started running historical walking food tours there. Initially designed as shore excursions for cruise lines, these tours have grown into immersive culinary experiences that continue to draw both locals and visitors alike.

On this trip, I had a special mission: to scout out restaurants for some exciting new food tours we’re curating, focused on three iconic neighborhoods—The North End, The South End, and The Seaport. While the final touches are still being added to these new tours, I couldn’t wait to share the highlights of my recent visit.

A Taste of The North End

Known as Boston’s Little Italy, the North End is home to some of the city’s most beloved Italian restaurants. I had dinner with a couple of our tour guides at Monica’s Trattoria, and it was a meal to remember. We started with a selection of shareable appetizers—arugula salad, tomato bruschetta, truffle Parmesan fries, and aged prosciutto de Parma. Everything was incredible, but the main course stole the show: Vitello e Melanzane (breaded veal cutlet topped with fried eggplant, mozzarella, and San Marzano sauce over homemade penne). And, of course, no Italian meal is complete without a sweet finish, so we ended with a classic tiramisu that hit the spot.

Strolling Through The South End

At the suggestion of my local guides, I explored the South End, another neighborhood brimming with food tour potential. This area is charmingly walkable, with cozy, intimate restaurants lining the streets. While I didn’t have the chance to dine at every spot, some highlights include the Barcelona Wine Bar which is opening a location in Delray Beach, FL. Each spot offered something unique, and I can’t wait to include them in future tours.

Seaport Adventures

Boston’s Seaport District offers stunning waterfront views and some of the freshest seafood you’ll find in the city.

Before meeting up with a longtime friend and local colleague, I stopped into Legal Seafoods (Legal Harborside) for a glass of wine while soaking in the view of the harbor. Later, we headed to Row 34, where I had what I believe might be my favorite lobster roll ever—perfectly cooked and bursting with flavor (though it may have been the priciest one I’ve had too!).

Lobster Roll,

A Sweet Tradition at Quincy Market

No trip to Boston is complete without a stop at Quincy Market, and I made sure to pop into Chipyard for some of their famous chocolate chip cookies. Having been in business for 47 years, Chipyard is a Boston institution, and their cookies never disappoint!

Stay tuned as we finalize the details of our new food tours in Boston. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, these curated tours will showcase the best flavors the city has to offer. Until then, I send you delicious wishes!

Xo,

Denise

Greeting Foodies,

In a world where personal health, environmental awareness, and animal welfare are becoming increasingly important, many individuals are embracing vegetarianism. While dietary choices are personal and can vary widely, the reasons for choosing a vegetarian lifestyle often stem from two interconnected factors: emotional motivations and health considerations. Both play a significant role in why people choose to adopt plant-based diets and maintain them long-term.

The Challenges of Eating Out and Staying Vegetarian

While many people adopt a vegetarian lifestyle with great enthusiasm, sticking to it can sometimes be challenging—especially when dining out. In many restaurants, the vegetarian options may be limited, or dishes that seem vegetarian may contain hidden animal products like broth or gelatin. This can lead to frustration and even temptations to abandon the diet momentarily in social situations.

Overcoming these obstacles often requires preparation and self-advocacy. Researching restaurant menus ahead of time, asking questions about ingredients, or suggesting vegetarian-friendly venues can help navigate dining situations without compromising one’s values. With more restaurants now catering to plant-based diets, the options are steadily improving, making it easier to stay on course.

Research Restaurants

Embrace the diversity of flavors and textures available to you! Exploring Plant-Based Options
When dining out, explore the various vegetarian dishes available. Many cuisines naturally offer a range of plant-based options:Italian: Think of hearty pasta dishes, risottos, and Caprese salads.
Indian: Dishes like palak paneer, samosas, and lentil dal are not only filling but packed with flavor.
Middle Eastern: Options such as hummus, tabbouleh, and falafel are delicious and satisfying.
Asian: Many Asian cuisines feature tofu and vegetable stir-fries, sushi rolls, and curry dishes.

Navigating restaurant menus as a vegetarian opens up a world of flavors and experiences. Here’s how to make the most of your dining adventures while embracing a vegetarian lifestyle.

Don’t Hesitate to Ask Questions
When you’re unsure about a dish, ask your server for more information. Many chefs are happy to accommodate dietary preferences and can often modify dishes to make them vegetarian-friendly. Inquiring about ingredients ensures you know exactly what you’re eating, helping you stay true to your vegetarian commitment.

Share and Discover
Dining out is more fun when you share! Invite friends or family to join you and order a variety of dishes to sample. This not only allows you to explore different flavors but also encourages those around you to try new vegetarian options. You might be surprised by how many people enjoy plant-based dishes!

You can enjoy dining out while staying true to your vegetarian values. So next time you’re planning a meal, dive into the rich tapestry of vegetarian dining and savor every bite of your journey!

Cheers!

Hello Foodie Friends,

Last night, I had the pleasure of dining at Sixty Vines in Boca Raton, where I experienced an unforgettable evening of perfectly paired food, wine, and music. Sixty Vines teamed up with The Symphonia, South Florida’s Premier Chamber Orchestra, to deliver a command performance that delighted all the senses.

An Evening of Harmony

The event, aptly named “Harmony & Vines: A Symphony of Flavor,” featured a meticulously curated four-course menu, with each dish paired with a carefully selected wine and live music from The Symphonia. This collaboration resulted in an extraordinary fusion of culinary art and orchestral music, creating a unique and immersive dining experience.

The menu

First Course: Fried Chicken & Caviar

• Paired with Sesenta Cava from Spain

• Accompanied by music from Spain

The evening began with a surprising yet delightful combination of fried chicken and caviar. The effervescence and acidity of the Sesenta Cava cut through the richness of the fried chicken, while the music from Spain set an elegant and festive tone for the night.

Second Course: Shrimp Campanelle

• Paired with Stemmari Pinot Grigio from Sicily

• Accompanied by music from Italy

Next up was the Shrimp Campanelle, a vibrant dish that was perfectly complemented by the delicate flavors and citrus notes of the Stemmari Pinot Grigio. The accompanying Italian music added an extra layer of authenticity and romance to the course.

Third Course: Pork Tenderloin

• Paired with Lange Pinot Noir from Oregon

• Folk Music accompanies this course

The third course featured a succulent pork tenderloin served family style along with glazed carrots and crispy smashed potatoes (some of the best I’ve ever had) paired with Lange Pinot Noir. This light to medium-bodied red wine, known for its fruity and spicy flavors, beautifully balanced the pork’s richness. The folk music provided a warm and rustic ambiance, enhancing the overall experience.

Fourth Course: Deviled Affogato

• Paired with Saint Andre from France

• As does the music from France that will accompany this course

For dessert, we indulged in a Deviled Affogato paired with Saint Andre. The combination of chocolate, coffee, and French wine was simply divine,(and if I’m being completely honest, I’m still thinking about it as I write this) and the French music added a touch of sophistication to the final course.

Sixty Vines: The Winemaker’s Restaurant

Sixty Vines is a place where great food, wine, and company come together to create unforgettable moments. Known as “the winemaker’s restaurant,” they deliver wine country-inspired cuisine paired perfectly with 60 wines on their sustainable tap system. Guests are invited to be transported to the greatest wine regions around the globe with pours and pairings tailored to their palates.

A Nationwide Experience

Sixty Vines is not just limited to Boca Raton. With locations across the country and several more openings planned for this year, this unique dining experience is accessible to many. Each location maintains the restaurant’s commitment to sustainability and offers a similar menu that showcases the best in food and wine pairings.

Conclusion

Indulge in an experience where every bite, sip, and note work in perfect harmony.

The Harmony & Vines event at Sixty Vines was a truly memorable evening, showcasing the seamless blend of culinary excellence and musical artistry. If you have the opportunity to attend a similar event or simply dine at Sixty Vines, I highly recommend it. For more information and to find a location near you, visit SixtyVines.com. Hello Foodie Friends,

July is a month of warmth, sunshine, and the bountiful harvest of one of nature’s most delightful fruits—blueberries. Designated as National Blueberry Month, July celebrates the tiny, vibrant berry that packs a punch of flavor, nutrition, and versatility. From its historical roots to its health benefits and culinary uses, blueberries have earned their place as a beloved fruit.

Blueberries are native to North America, where they have been enjoyed for thousands of years. Indigenous peoples in North America were the first to recognize the value of wild blueberries, using them for food, medicine, and even as a fabric dye. They referred to the berry as “star berries” due to the five-pointed star shape formed at the blossom end of the fruit.

The cultivation of blueberries began in the early 20th century, thanks to the efforts of Elizabeth Coleman White and Dr. Frederick V. Coville. White, a New Jersey farmer, and Coville, a USDA botanist, worked together to domesticate wild blueberries. Their pioneering work led to the development of the cultivated highbush blueberry varieties that we enjoy today.

Blueberries are often referred to as a superfood, and for good reason. These small berries are packed with essential nutrients and antioxidants that offer numerous health benefits.

The blueberry industry is a significant contributor to the agricultural economy in the United States. Blueberries are grown in many states, with the largest producers being Michigan, Oregon, Washington, Georgia, and New Jersey. The industry supports thousands of jobs, from farm workers to processors and distributors.

In recent years, the demand for blueberries has grown steadily, driven by increasing awareness of their health benefits and versatility in culinary applications. Blueberries are used in a wide range of products, including fresh fruit, frozen berries, juices, jams, baked goods, and dietary supplements.

As a foodie expert, I am thrilled to share with you five delightful blueberry recipes that will elevate your culinary celebrations for National Blueberry Month. Each recipe showcases the versatility and vibrant flavor of this superfruit, making it easy to incorporate blueberries into every meal of the day. From a refreshing breakfast parfait to a decadent dessert, these recipes are designed to bring out the best in blueberries, highlighting their natural sweetness and nutritional benefits. Whether you’re looking for a wholesome start to your morning or a sweet treat to end your day, these blueberry dishes are sure to impress and satisfy. Hello Foodie Friends,

July 1st marks a special day for food lovers everywhere – National French Fry Day! This beloved dish, enjoyed by millions worldwide, transcends cultural boundaries and brings people together. Whether you prefer them crispy or soft, seasoned or plain, French fries are a universal comfort food with a fascinating history and endless variations.

Contrary to what the name might suggest, French fries did not originate in France. Their history is a matter of some debate, with both France and Belgium laying claim to their invention. The Belgians argue that they were the first to fry thin strips of potatoes as early as the late 1600s, while the French contend that the dish became popular in Parisian cafes in the 1700s. Regardless of their true origin, French fries have become a global sensation.

One of the reasons French fries are so beloved is their remarkable versatility, allowing them to adapt and transform into a myriad of unique variations enjoyed across the globe. From the double-fried perfection of Belgian fries to the indulgent poutine of Canada, each culture adds its own twist, showcasing the endless possibilities of this universally cherished dish. Here are some unique variations from around the world:

Belgium

Known for their double-fried method, Belgian fries are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. They are typically served with a variety of sauces, from classic mayonnaise to adventurous flavors like Andalouse and Samurai.

France

In their homeland, French fries, or “pommes frites,” are often enjoyed with steak or mussels. The French take pride in their cooking technique, ensuring each fry is perfectly crisp.

United States

From fast food joints to gourmet restaurants, French fries are a staple in American cuisine. Variations like curly fries, waffle fries, and cheese fries showcase the creativity and love for this dish in the U.S.

Canada

Our neighbors to the north have their own special take on French fries – poutine. This indulgent dish consists of fries topped with cheese curds and smothered in gravy, creating a deliciously messy and satisfying meal.

United Kingdom

Known as “chips,” British fries are thicker than their American counterparts and are often served with fish. The classic fish and chips combo is a quintessential British dish.

Creating the perfect French fry is both an art and a science. The key to achieving that ideal balance of crispy exterior and fluffy interior lies in the type of potato used, the cutting technique, and the cooking method. Russet potatoes, known for their high starch content and low moisture, are often considered the best for frying. The potatoes are typically cut into uniform strips to ensure even cooking. Many chefs swear by the double-frying method: first frying the potatoes at a lower temperature to cook them through, and then a second fry at a higher temperature to achieve that irresistible crispiness.

While French fries are traditionally deep-fried, there are many healthier alternatives for those looking to enjoy this treat without the guilt. Baking or air frying can significantly reduce the amount of oil used, resulting in a lighter yet still delicious fry.

Sweet potatoes offer a nutritious twist with their rich flavor and higher levels of vitamins and fiber. For an extra boost of flavor, try seasoning your fries with herbs and spices like rosemary, paprika, or garlic powder.

French fries have not only made their mark on our taste buds but also on popular culture. They are a staple in fast food chains, a frequent feature in movies and television shows, and even the subject of art and music. Their universal appeal is evident in how they bridge gaps between different cuisines and dining experiences, from street food to fine dining. French fries have become a symbol of comfort and indulgence, embodying the simple pleasure of enjoying good food.

National French Fry Day is more than just a celebration of a delicious snack; it’s a tribute to a culinary icon that brings joy to people of all ages and backgrounds. Whether you’re a purist who loves them with just a sprinkle of salt or an adventurer who enjoys them loaded with toppings, French fries have a special place in our hearts and on our plates. So, on July 1st, let’s raise a fry and toast to this crispy delight!

Happy National French Fry Day!

Until we eat again…

Hello Foodie Friends,

As the days grow longer and the temperatures rise, June ushers in a season brimming with outdoor activities and cherished traditions. Among these is National Corn on the Cob Day, celebrated annually on June 11th. This delightful day pays homage to one of summer’s simplest yet most beloved treats: corn on the cob.

Corn, or maize, has been a staple in the Americas for thousands of years. Originating in what is now Mexico around 10,000 years ago, it was first domesticated by indigenous peoples who cultivated various strains of this versatile crop. Corn played a vital role in the diets and cultures of many Native American tribes and eventually became a cornerstone of American agriculture following European colonization.

Corn on the cob, specifically, has been enjoyed since the early days of maize cultivation. The fresh, sweet kernels, cooked and eaten right off the cob, are a seasonal delight that many eagerly anticipate each summer. National Corn on the Cob Day celebrates this timeless pleasure, highlighting both its historical significance and its enduring popularity in contemporary cuisine.

Here are a few reasons why this humble vegetable continues to be a favorite:

Simplicity and Flavor

Whether grilled, boiled, or roasted, corn on the cob requires minimal preparation and brings out the natural sweetness of the corn. A simple pat of butter, a sprinkle of salt, or a dash of seasoning can enhance its flavor without overshadowing its inherent taste. The contrast of the juicy, tender kernels against the slightly charred outer layers when grilled adds a depth of flavor that is hard to resist.

Versatility

Corn on the cob can be enjoyed in many forms and settings. It’s perfect for backyard barbecues, picnics, and family dinners. It pairs well with a variety of dishes and can be dressed up with spices, cheeses, and herbs to suit any palate. From simple butter and salt to more elaborate toppings like chili powder and lime, the versatility of corn on the cob makes it a culinary canvas for creativity.

Cultural Icon

Beyond its culinary appeal, corn on the cob holds a special place in American culture. It evokes images of summer fairs, county festivals, and Fourth of July celebrations. It’s a symbol of abundance and community, often enjoyed in the company of loved ones.

Celebrate National Corn on the Cob Day with a simple yet delicious home recipe that highlights the natural sweetness and flavor of fresh corn. This recipe is easy to prepare and perfect for any summer gathering.

Ingredients

  • 4 ears of fresh corn, husked
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Optional toppings: grated Parmesan cheese, chili powder, lime wedges, fresh herbs (such as cilantro or parsley), garlic butter, or cotija cheese

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Corn:
    • Remove the husks and silks from the corn. Rinse the ears under cool water to remove any remaining silks.
  2. Choose Your Cooking Method:
    • Boiling:
      1. Fill a large pot with enough water to cover the corn. Bring the water to a boil.
      2. Add a pinch of salt to the boiling water.
      3. Place the ears of corn in the boiling water and cook for 4-6 minutes until the kernels are tender but still slightly crisp.
      4. Remove the corn from the water and let it drain.
    • Grilling:
      1. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat.
      2. Lightly brush the ears of corn with olive oil to prevent sticking.
      3. Place the corn directly on the grill grates. Cook for about 10-15 minutes, turning every 2-3 minutes to ensure even cooking and charring.
      4. Remove the corn from the grill when it is evenly charred and tender.
    • Oven Roasting:
      1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
      2. Wrap each ear of corn in aluminum foil with a pat of butter and a sprinkle of salt.
      3. Place the wrapped corn on a baking sheet and roast in the oven for 20-25 minutes.
      4. Carefully unwrap the corn from the foil once done.
  3. Season and Serve:
    • Spread the softened butter over the hot ears of corn.
    • Sprinkle with salt and black pepper to taste.
    • If desired, add additional toppings like grated Parmesan cheese, a sprinkle of chili powder, a squeeze of lime juice, fresh herbs, garlic butter, or cotija cheese for extra flavor.
    • Serve the corn on the cob immediately while it’s hot and enjoy the sweet, juicy kernels. Enjoy!

National Corn on the Cob Day is more than just a celebration of a favorite food; it’s a nod to the joys of summer and the simple pleasures that come with it. It’s a day to appreciate the agricultural heritage, the community spirit, and the culinary creativity that corn on the cob embodies.

On June 11th, take a moment to savor a fresh ear of corn, appreciate its history, and share the experience with others. Whether you’re grilling in the backyard, participating in a local festival, or simply enjoying a quiet meal at home, corn on the cob is a delicious reminder of the bounty of summer. This National Corn on the Cob Day, let’s celebrate the golden kernels that have brought joy and nourishment to countless generations. There’s nothing quite like the taste of summer in every bite of corn on the cob.

Happy National Corn on The Cob Day!

Hello Foodie Friends,

As April unfolds its blossoms and brings forth its delightful springtime charm, it also beckons the celebration of one of America’s most beloved snacks—the pretzel. National Pretzel Day, observed annually on April 26th, honors this twisted delight that has captured the hearts and taste buds of millions across the nation.

The origins of the pretzel trace back to Europe, where it emerged as a symbol of spirituality and sustenance. Legend has it that in the early 7th century, an Italian monk created these twisted treats to reward children who memorized their prayers. The shape of the pretzel, resembling folded arms in prayer, became synonymous with virtues such as luck, prosperity, and spiritual wholeness.

As pretzels journeyed across continents, their significance evolved. In Germany, pretzels became associated with Easter, symbolizing the intertwining of arms in unity and love. Immigrants brought this tradition to America, where pretzels quickly gained popularity, especially in Pennsylvania Dutch country.

What sets pretzels apart is their unique combination of flavors and textures—crispy on the outside, soft, and chewy on the inside, with just the right amount of saltiness to tantalize the taste buds. Whether enjoyed plain, dipped in mustard, or paired with cheese, pretzels offer a versatile canvas for culinary creativity.

Traditional pretzels, with their characteristic twisted shape, are made from a simple dough of flour, water, yeast, sugar, and salt. The dough is shaped into loops, briefly boiled in a baking soda solution, and then baked to golden perfection.

But the culinary world has embraced the pretzel beyond its traditional form. From pretzel buns adorning gourmet burgers to pretzel-crusted chicken adding a crunchy twist to classic dishes, chefs continue to experiment with this versatile ingredient, pushing the boundaries of flavor and innovation.

Pairing the perfect beverage with a pretzel is a delightful endeavor that enhances the flavors and elevates the experience.

For beer enthusiasts, a crisp and refreshing lager or pilsner serves as an ideal companion to the salty goodness of a pretzel. The light, effervescent qualities of these beers cleanse the palate with each sip, complementing the doughy texture and enhancing the subtle sweetness of the pretzel.

Alternatively, wine connoisseurs may opt for a dry Riesling or a fruity, off-dry rosé to balance the saltiness of the pretzel while accentuating its underlying flavors. The bright acidity and delicate fruit notes of these wines provide a harmonious contrast, creating a tantalizing sensory experience.

For those with a penchant for cocktails, a classic whiskey sour or a tangy margarita offers a refreshing twist to the traditional pretzel pairing. The citrusy acidity of these cocktails’ cuts through the richness of the pretzel, while the interplay of flavors tantalizes the taste buds, leaving a lingering sense of satisfaction with each sip and bite.

Whether you prefer beer, wine, or cocktails, finding the perfect pairing for your pretzel is sure to enhance the enjoyment of this timeless snack.

On April 26th, food enthusiasts and pretzel aficionados alike come together to celebrate National Pretzel Day. Whether you’re indulging in a classic soft pretzel at your favorite bakery, trying your hand at homemade pretzel-making, or exploring inventive pretzel-inspired dishes at a local restaurant, there are countless ways to honor this beloved snack.

Hello Foodie Friends,

Every year on April 18th, food enthusiasts across the nation come together to celebrate National Deviled Egg Day. While it may seem like a simple dish, deviled eggs hold a special place in culinary history and continue to delight taste buds with their creamy texture and savory flavor.

The origins of deviled eggs can be traced back to ancient Rome, where eggs were boiled, seasoned with various spices, and served as appetizers at lavish banquets. Over time, the dish evolved, with different regions adding their own unique twists and ingredients. In the 18th century, the term “deviled” came into use to describe dishes that were highly seasoned or spicy, leading to the creation of the modern deviled egg we know and love today.

Deviled eggs are incredibly versatile and can be customized to suit any palate. Here are a few recipe ideas to inspire your National Deviled Egg Day celebration:

Classic Deviled Eggs

Start with hard-boiled eggs, cut them in half, and scoop out the yolks. Mash the yolks with mayonnaise, mustard, salt, and pepper, then spoon the mixture back into the egg whites. Garnish with paprika for a classic touch.

Bacon and Cheddar Deviled Eggs

Add crispy bacon bits and shredded cheddar cheese to the yolk mixture for a decadent twist on the classic recipe. Top with chives for an extra pop of flavor.

Spicy Sriracha Deviled Eggs

For those who like a little heat, mix Sriracha sauce into the yolk mixture, along with mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, and a splash of vinegar. Garnish with sliced jalapenos for an extra kick.

Mediterranean Deviled Eggs

Incorporate flavors from the Mediterranean by mixing chopped olives, sun-dried tomatoes, and feta cheese into the yolk mixture. Garnish with fresh herbs like parsley or dill for a vibrant finish.

Deviled eggs may seem like a simple appetizer, but they hold a special place in many people’s hearts (and stomachs). They’re the perfect party food, easy to make in large batches and always a crowd-pleaser. Plus, they’re incredibly versatile, allowing home cooks to get creative with flavors and toppings.

Beyond their delicious taste, deviled eggs also have cultural significance, representing comfort food for many and serving as a nostalgic reminder of family gatherings and special occasions. By celebrating National Deviled Egg Day, we honor this beloved dish and the joy it brings to people’s lives.

Pairing the perfect beverage with deviled eggs can elevate the experience and enhance the flavors of this beloved dish. Here are some recommendations for wine, beer, and cocktails that complement deviled eggs:

Wine Pairing

A classic choice, Chardonnay’s creamy texture and notes of citrus and oak beautifully complement the richness of deviled eggs. With its crisp acidity and flavors of green apple and grapefruit, Sauvignon Blanc provides a refreshing contrast to the creamy texture of deviled eggs. Whether it’s Champagne, Prosecco, or Cava, the effervescence and acidity of sparkling wine cleanse the palate between bites of deviled eggs, making it a delightful pairing.

Beer Pairing

The clean, crisp flavors of a pilsner refresh the palate and complement the savory notes of deviled eggs without overpowering them. With its citrusy and spicy notes, a Belgian witbier adds a refreshing zing that pairs well with the creamy texture of deviled eggs. The balanced bitterness and malt sweetness of a pale ale provide a nice counterpoint to the richness of deviled eggs, creating a harmonious pairing.

Cocktail Pairing

The botanicals of gin or vodka in a classic martini cleanse the palate and prepare it for the next creamy, savory bite of deviled eggs. The bold flavors of tomato juice, vodka, Worcestershire sauce, and spices in a Bloody Mary complement the richness of deviled eggs, making it a perfect pairing for brunch or cocktail hour. A combination of champagne and orange juice, a mimosa provides a refreshing and citrusy contrast to the creamy texture of deviled eggs, making it an ideal pairing for a leisurely brunch.

National Deviled Egg Day is a time to indulge in one of the most beloved appetizers of all time. Whether you prefer the classic recipe or like to get creative with flavors, take this opportunity to savor every bite and share the joy of deviled eggs with friends and family. So, mark your calendars for April 18th and get ready to celebrate in style!

Until we eat (and drink) again…

Hello Foodie Friends,

In the culinary world, few dishes evoke as much warmth and conviviality as cheese fondue. This iconic Swiss dish, with its rich history and irresistible appeal, is celebrated annually on April 11th as National Cheese Fondue Day. It’s a time-honored occasion that invites cheese lovers around the world to indulge in the delightful experience of dipping bread, vegetables, and more into a bubbling pot of melted cheese.

The roots of cheese fondue trace back to Switzerland, where it emerged as a clever way for Alpine herders to make use of stale bread and aged cheese during the harsh winter months. Historically, it was a humble peasant dish, but its popularity gradually spread beyond the Alpine region, becoming an international sensation by the mid-20th century.

Partaking in cheese fondue is more than just a meal—it’s a communal ritual that brings people together. The fondue pot, typically made of ceramic or metal, sits atop a portable stove, keeping the cheese molten and inviting guests to gather around and dip to their heart’s content. The etiquette of fondue is simple but essential: never double-dip your bread, and if your bread falls off into the pot, tradition dictates that you must kiss the person sitting next to you!

While the classic Swiss fondue made with Gruyère and Emmental cheeses is perhaps the most well-known, there are countless variations to explore. From French-inspired fondue savoyarde featuring Comté and Beaufort cheeses to the Italian fonduta with Fontina cheese and truffles, each regional variation offers a unique flavor profile and cultural twist.

The beauty of cheese fondue lies in its versatility, both in terms of the cheeses used and the accompaniments served alongside. Crusty bread cubes are the traditional choice, but other popular dippers include blanched vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower, cured meats such as prosciutto and salami, and even fruit like apple slices for a touch of sweetness. To elevate the experience, consider pairing your fondue with a crisp white wine, a hearty red, or even a cocktail, or a mug of hot tea. Here are five common ways to enjoy fondue along with their perfect wine, beer, or cocktail pairings:

Classic Cheese Fondue

Pairing: A classic Swiss cheese fondue made with Gruyère and Emmental cheeses calls for a crisp and refreshing white wine like a Swiss Fendant or a French Sauvignon Blanc. The acidity and minerality of these wines complement the richness of the cheese beautifully.

Alternative Pairing: For beer lovers, a light and crisp lager or pilsner would be an excellent choice. The effervescence and mild hop bitterness cleanse the palate between each indulgent dip.

Fondue Savoyarde (French Alps Style)

Pairing: This hearty fondue, typically made with Comté and Beaufort cheeses, pairs wonderfully with a medium-bodied white wine such as Chardonnay or Viognier. Look for wines with a touch of oak aging to complement the nutty and savory flavors of the cheese.

Alternative Pairing: A Belgian-style ale or a farmhouse saison with fruity and spicy notes enhances the earthy flavors of the cheese while providing a refreshing contrast.

Fonduta (Italian Fondue)

Pairing: Fontina cheese is the star of Italian fonduta, and it harmonizes beautifully with a light-bodied red wine like a Barbera or a Dolcetto. These Italian reds offer bright acidity and soft tannins that complement the creamy texture of the fonduta.

Alternative Pairing: For a cocktail option, consider a classic Negroni. The bittersweet flavors of Campari and vermouth cut through the richness of the fonduta while the gin adds a refreshing herbal note.

Chocolate Fondue

Pairing: When it comes to chocolate fondue, opt for a sweet and fruity dessert wine such as a Ruby Port or a late-harvest Riesling. These wines echo the flavors of the chocolate while providing a luscious and indulgent pairing.

Alternative Pairing: For a beer pairing, try a rich and malty stout or porter with chocolate undertones. The roasted flavors of the beer complement the chocolatey goodness of the fondue without overwhelming the palate.

Broth or Oil Fondue (for Meat or Seafood)

Pairing: For broth or oil fondues used for cooking meat or seafood, a light and crisp white wine like a Pinot Grigio or a Grüner Veltliner is an ideal choice. These wines cleanse the palate and provide a refreshing contrast to the rich and savory meats.

Alternative Pairing: If you prefer beer, a light and effervescent Belgian witbier or a German-style Kölsch pairs well with the variety of flavors encountered in broth or oil fondues. Their delicate flavors and moderate alcohol content won’t overpower the food.

On April 11th, cheese enthusiasts worldwide come together to celebrate the joy of cheese fondue. Whether you’re hosting a fondue party with friends and family or treating yourself to a cozy night in, there’s no wrong way to partake in the festivities. Get creative with your cheese selection, experiment with different dipping options, and above all, savor the convivial atmosphere and camaraderie that cheese fondue brings.

National Cheese Fondue Day is a delightful reminder of the enduring appeal of this iconic dish. Beyond its culinary merits, cheese fondue embodies the spirit of togetherness and conviviality, making it a beloved tradition worth celebrating. So, on April 11th, gather your loved ones, fire up the fondue pot, and embark on a journey of indulgence and camaraderie as you pay homage to this timeless culinary classic. Cheers to cheese fondue!

Until we eat (and drink) again…
